UR59: Bridging the social mobility gap
October 14 2024
In the social media age connections have become more important than ever but while our digital infrastructure has blossomed our physical connectivity has lagged.
In issue 59 of Urban Realm magazine we see how Glasgow addresses this disparity by embarking on an ambitious bridge-building programme, linking communities north and south of the River Clyde from Govan to Renfrew. As a regeneration strategy, it surely has legs and segues neatly into our blowout engineering report.
We look at the people, companies and projects bridging the social mobility gap. Looking beyond the dazzle and glare of the new construction we investigate a growing movement to adapt and repurpose existing buildings first, asking how architects and engineers are shifting to a make-good-and-mend approach.
This is evident at the new Woodmill & St Columba’s, where structure plays an important role in attaining a noteworthy Passivhaus certification. It is a shift which may have come too late for places like Cumbernauld but could yet give a second wind to the Macedonian capital of Skopje, as we discover on an excursion to a Modernist Mecca which retains its power to shock and awe despite numerous postmodern accretions.
It is time to walk the walk on connectivity by picking up your copy of Urban Realm.
