Galston supermarket tussle ends with a facelift
October 4 2024
A disused Galston supermarket is to be brought back to life under plans to reclad the property for an alternative occupier.
An application by Smith Design Associates on behalf of Downie Capital proposes to remodel the 19,000 sq ft premises for mixed retail use, subdividing the current property while giving it a rain-screen cladding facelift.
Renamed Loudon Retail Park the venture has been spurred by the opening of a new Tesco store next door, prompting the Co-op to shut up shop. Undeterred by the competition Farmfoods has already agreed to take on the lease.
Gareth Downie, managing director of Downie Capital, said: “It will be great to be able to bring this building back to life and, more importantly, create a significant number of jobs within quality national retailers, re-establishing an important retail hub for the area.
“The Co-op closed in 2018 and had lain empty for six years until we purchased it. Farmfoods is taking 11,000sq ft of space and another 5,000 sq ft available which can be divided into three retail units and we’ve already had interest in these from a number of national retailers.
"There will be an additional 2,500 sq ft of office space at Loudoun Retail Park."
The development will also include eight charging bays for electric vehicles.
