Affordable homes replace an Anniesland sawmill

Partick Housing Association have taken possession of 46 affordable homes at Bearsden Road in Anniesland, following their handover by contractor CCG.

A range of one and two-bedroom flats for social and mid-market rent have been designed by Mast Architects to evoke the memory of a sawmill that once occupied the site, the last surviving element of which was demolished to make way for the build.

In a statement, Mast Architects wrote: "We’re delighted to see the Bearsden Road project complete in a time when providing warm and healthy homes is more important than ever.  The main architectural moves, from the serrated roof forms to the material palette, draw on an understanding of the site’s former industrial uses, with the completed scheme offering a robust response to a very public setting."

Overlooking the Forth & Clyde Canal, the properties are arranged over two five-storey blocks, establishing an urban frontage to Bearsden Road and Crow Road on approach to Anniesland.

The £10m development includes associated amenity space and public art.

The amenity space - or should I say lack of- is appalling. How'd they get away wi that?

Maybe they should've tried to evoke the Art Deco building they callously knocked down to build this mess.

The orientation of the roofs is an odd one: why not orient both blocks the same way, which would unify them, and maximise the solar panel coverage too?

Out of scale and out of place, looks like some Dutch townhouses that got put through a wonky photocopier wit the 'enlarge and dull down' setting turned up high.

I was so saddened to see the art deco building demolished and now these overpowering monstrosities are in its place I'm even more saddened. Far too tall and overbearing.
