Stately Selkirk pile to become a wedding and community venue

The final stage of restoration works to an 18th-century stately pile in Selkirk is to go ahead following the receipt of vital funding.

Haining Charitable Trust secured £600k from Social Investment Scotland, money which will see Haining House, an A-listed Palladian Georgian villa, become a community and wedding venue.

Dating from 1794 the ornate pile was gifted to the town by Andrew Nimmo-Smith upon his passing in 2009, when he bequeathed ownership to the trust.

Improvements overseen by LeeBoyd will include the installation of a lift, improved facilities, a link extension and a new events marquee. Previous work includes the redevelopment of the former coach house into artist studios, the creation of holiday accommodation in stable flats and dairy cottages and the provision of accessible pathways around the grounds.

Michelle Ballantyne, chief executive officer and trustee of the Haining Charitable Trust said: “Haining House and the wider estate is being developed as ‘a place for everyone’ and over the last 14 years it has cemented its role in Selkirk and the wider community. Sadly, despite its popularity, the house was no longer structurally safe, and it has taken a significant amount of work and a great deal of support to bring it back to life."

The works are the final piece of a £3.75m refurbishment plan begun in 2019, with the main house shutting its doors in 2021 following the discovery of dry rot.

Beautiful building in a properly Palladian setting. Remodelled in 1820 by Archibald Elliott who did so much in Edinburgh.

Well done to all involved for raising the capital and arranging the work, ensuring the building may continue to provide much enjoyment for the community and visitors.
