Architects & designers invited to explore the cultural potential of Helmsdale

A former herring curing yard turned cultural centre in a Sutherland village is seeking expressions of interest from architects and design teams to undertake a feasibility study for its redevelopment.

Timespan is collaborating with the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland on the competition, which will establish a more cohesive built presence in the heart of Helmsdale.

Development goals include providing better facilities while working towards a net-zero commitment by 2035.

Giulia Gregnanin, director/curator of Timespan, said: "Our aim is to holistically rethink the space we inhabit, exploring how it can unlock our potential as an institution of the commons—a space where people and communities come together to drive meaningful action. We envision a new building that reflects our local, national, and planetary ambitions to serve as a catalyst for change.”

A deadline for expressions of interest has been set for 21 October after which four teams will be invited for a site visit and to submit a tender. The winning team will then have six months to produce a report detailing designs and costs to RIBA Stage 1.

Looks like a good opportunity to improve facilities along the North Coast 500 route, which are badly needed - for locals and tourists too.
