Modest Bridgeton Cross retrofit praised for redefining the inner city

The reuse of a former Salvation Army Citadel in Glasgow's east end to provide 280sq/m of office space has earned national recognition for its contribution to the burgeoning retrofit sector.
New Olympia House by O'DonnellBrown is a £1.7m refurbishment and conversion of a two-storey red sandstone building in the Bridgeton Cross conservation area, lending new life to a historic building by exposing the original fabric and decluttering internal spaces.
Key additions include the installation of a platform lift and public entrance topped by a sculptural metal tower. Improved insulation and the introduction of air source heat pump technology and underfloor heating have further enticed tenants.
Jennifer O’Donnell, Director, O’DonnellBrown, said: “New Olympia House provided an exciting opportunity to repurpose a historic building and further strengthen one of Glasgow’s historic Crosses.”
The project, spearheaded by Clyde Gateway to leverage additional investment in an overlooked area, was named retrofit of the year by the AJ.
