Doig+Smith have been appointed by The City of Edinburgh Council as quantity surveyors for the £12m refurbishment of the Assembly Rooms, George Street.

The renowned venue, which opened its doors in 1783, will be restored to its original grandeur and will house a performing arts and events space capable of accommodating conferences.

Spatially the revamped venue will incorporate a number of retail units on the ground floor and the current Supper Room will operate as a fine dining restaurant.  The upper floors, which include the Ballroom and the Music Hall, will house an events space alongside a number of small meeting areas. 

In addition all the mechanical and electrical work will be replaced throughout and an IT infrastructure put in place to provide high speed box office and online booking systems.

The brief for the project was to retain the building’s rich heritage and create an attractive international destination, intended to become the city’s most prestigious and stylish cultural venue.

Work is expected to start on site late 2010 to be complete ready for the Edinburgh Festival in 2012.
