Born again Edinburgh office block to be turned inside out

A detailed planning application has been filed for the refurbishment of a central Edinburgh office block by Ardstone Capital.
Calton Square at the top of Leith Walk was designed in the 1990s by Allan Murray Architects and needs extensive modernisation to meet the needs of tenants, prompting a radical rethink by the building owners.
Sheppard Robson will oversee the remodelling work, retaining windows, façade, lifts, entrances and much of the existing structure to sustainability and net zero objectives.
Craig McDonald, principal and managing director of Ardstone Capital commented: “The dialogue with the Council and other stakeholders has been very productive, and the application seeks to deliver an office building comparable to the best in Europe, which will serve Edinburgh well into the future.
“With the highest environmental performance standards, and the lowest possible carbon footprint, this refurbished building will seek to deliver improved ground floor activity and accessibility."
Priorities include the enhancement of roof terraces and gardens serving the 200,000sq/ft property and the insertion of a central atrium that has the potential to double as an auditorium.
