Dundee FC training facility to boost links between players and public

Dundee Football Club Community Trust, a separate charity arm of the club, has shared its intent to establish a new training facility and community hub in the city.

A site at Riverside Drive has been identified for the combined facility, which includes new and upgraded pitches, moveable seating and a public footpath to draw together a range of training resources currently scattered across the city.

LJRH Architects have designed the £4m centre for a 1.75-hectare site, positioning the main entrance on Riverside Drive to help delineate public and private areas.

In a statement, the architects wrote: "The building has been designed following the ‘form follows function’ principle. Its ground floor, clad in stone, is designed to have a solid and robust appearance. This part of the building will be visually anchored to the ground, reflecting its functional role in housing essential facilities for players such as changing rooms, sanitary facilities, and medical rooms. In contrast, the upper floor, accommodating the supporting ancillary functions such as offices and meeting rooms, features silvery grey metal cladding and extensive glazing, allowing the interior to be filled with natural light. This gives the upper floor a sense of lightness and transparency, visually reducing the scale of the building.

"The building has a projecting volume to the east that marks the main public entrance. This volume rises above the main two-storey structure to accommodate a plant room on the roof. To ensure this volumetric feature does not feel heavy, it has extensive glazing on the sides."

Balconies to the west offer elevated pitchside views while large windows further emphasise visual connections.

Good to see some real investment at Riverside - the University playing fields and pavilion are decent, but the council "facilities" on the other side of Riverside Drive are grim.
