Clydebank charette to deliver a ten-year town centre vision
August 1 2024
Clydebank residents are being invited to have their say on the future direction of their town over the coming decade as part of the UK government's levelling up programme.
The long-term plan will focus on heritage, transport and security and seeks to integrate the railway station into the developing waterfront area on one side and established commercial district on the other.
A project team including Threesixty Architecture and Kevin Murray Associates have set out initial ideas for the town board which include sprucing up dank viaducts with lighting and signage to encourage north-south footfall.
Envisaging a continued decline in retail the plans foresee demolition of the southern half of the Clyde shopping mall and its replacement with a mixed-use neighbourhood oriented around a new town square in front of the landmark Co-op building and opposite a redesigned transport interchange. Featuring a market hall, performance space and a town clock modelled on the lost Singer factory this civic space would serve as the new heart of the town.
A canalside activity centre is also proposed to make better use of existing assets.
The deadline for public submissions is 9 August.
