Wetland to put a soggy Edinburgh parkland on solid footing

A rundown Edinburgh park is in line for a major overhaul to establish a seasonal wetland, growing space and skatepark.

West Pilton Park, managed by Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust, is the focus of an Optimised Environments masterplan (based on initial work by Liz Thomas landscape architects) that will remodel the land with significant earthworks to establish themed areas.

Planned enhancements include screening utilitarian boundary fencing with beech hedging and improved access for maintenance and events. An upgraded path network will link interior features, notably a wetland encircled by a boardwalk. Other points of interest include a mounded landscape designed to encourage play, an area reserved for ball games and a relocated play park.

These will be joined by a community garden, dog park and bothy-style shelters. A possible pavilion offering shelter and refreshments is also imagined, subject to a separate planning application.
