Edinburgh school extension to meet rising population demands

A newly completed Edinburgh school will be expanded three years after opening to cope with a fast-growing population.

Holmes Miller Architects have returned to Frogston Primary to provide classroom space for an additional 196 pupils in six classrooms, eased by the deliberate oversizing of facilities when delivering the main school.

In a statement, the architects wrote: "The original school was completed in June 2021. It was designed with expansion in mind, with an area towards the east of the classroom wing identified for future expansion from the outset. The architectural language of the existing school will be carried across to the design of the extension."

Building out onto the playground the extension replicates the form of an existing teaching wing with multi-cream brick and an asymmetric pitched roof.

Window openings also match the existing, carrying a rhythmic pattern of size and placement forward to a new entrance.
