Granton Harbour 'Broadwalk' to reactivate the waterfront

Wilson and Gunn have filed plans for the latest expansion of Granton Harbour, a mixed development of 81 flats and nine commercial units along with related public realm.

The latest application concerns plot 35a of a broader masterplan where 79 apartments and three houses will be built at the northern end of Hesperus Broadway alongside a pedestrian avenue heading to a quayside 'Broadwalk' promenade.

In a design statement, Wilson and Gunn wrote: "The proposed development comprises a balance of public streets, paths and open spaces complimented by a series of perimeter blocks containing residential and commercial accommodation. The land use out with the building footprints, private gardens and courtyard areas is for public use and promotes full accessibility, high permeability and connected spaces for both residents and visitors to enjoy the harbour environment."

Ground floor commercial units and apartment entrances will be finished in bronze cladding with the 'monolithic' design broken down by Corian cladding panels inset with contrasting materials. Front gardens of ground floor flats are elevated above street level to provide privacy for residents.

Has anything Wilson and Gunn have designed for Granton Harbour actually been built?

Not getting anything built is a good business strategy. So often when projects go on site firms lose money due to programme overruns and additional unpaid services being provided.

"Reactivating the waterfront with a broadwalk". Great, there were plans to go from Granton to Portobello at one point, hopefully that's still a thing.

More generally, surely a prime waterfront site like this needs to be higher density than 5/6 stories? Anyone paying attention to this website will note the unending low density developments in the adjacent Lothians and Fife. The central belt is a relatively small area in a relatively small country. At this rate most of it will soon be covered in CALA and Persimmons bungalows...not I would suggest an optimal outcome.
