Finalised design submitted for Dundee Museum of Transport
June 25 2024
Detailed designs to transform a former tram depot into a new home for the Dundee Museum of Transport have been drawn up by Andrew Black Design.
The culmination of extensive pre-application design work the project will see the B-listed former Maryfield Tram Depot developed in four phases with priority given to the failing roof, for which emergency repairs have already been carried out.
Proposals will retain the original 1901 building while introducing modest modern elements such as a glazed screen, entrance doors and 'pod' accommodation, respectful of its position in the Maryfield conservation area.
The bulk of the cavernous space will be given over to an exhibition hall with ancillary uses including a cafe, classrooms and a community hub.
In a design statement, the applicant wrote: "The proposed layout, design, materials, and scale of the development have been carefully considered to ensure a flexible regeneration of the building and site to suit its new use as a transport museum. The proposed design also respects and complements the building’s historic significance, character, appearance and setting. The sustainable and sympathetic restoration of this listed building including the retention of existing architecturally significant features, will prevent further deterioration of building fabric and provide a new home for the museum, enabling it to remain in active use well into the future."
Notable changes will be made to the west gable where full-height timber doors and glass will be installed to open up the space and establish a formal link between public and private areas.

The current display of the model ships is a disgrace -- 150 years of Clydebuilt history literally left on the shelf or hanging from the ceiling.
No wonder we can't build a ferry with this parody of public engagement to our industrial past.
