Revised Meadowbank housing bid vaults planning hurdle

Revised plans for a major residential development at Edinburgh's newly rebuilt Meadowbank Stadium have been approved upon referral after overcoming 56 objections.

The City of Edinburgh Council, as landowner, development partner and planning body, can now proceed with building 705 homes, up from 683, of which 34% will be affordable, on over 7 acres of vacant ground off London Road.

Led by EMA Architecture & Design the project will span three distinct development plots comprising a mix of 428 mainstream apartments and a further 277 reserved for the build-to-rent market. Staggered buff brick apartment blocks will rise around the periphery of the sports complex, following a Collective Architecture masterplan, to help pay for the new facility.

Revisions include 'gating off' amenity to the rear of Plot A apartment blocks and the use of green roofs for cycle and refuse stores. Render has also been substituted for brick on all stadium-facing elevations.

A playpark and orchard named Turntable Park, in memory of the former St Margaret's Locomotive Railway Depot to the site's eastern boundary, is also planned. A doctor's surgery and cafe are also included.

The council's development partners are Graham, Miller Homes and Panacea Property Development.
