Moxon scores a hat trick with Norwegian bridges win

Moxon Architects is to extend their bridge-building streak fresh from their completion of Gairnshiel Bridge in the Cairngorms after winning a Norwegian design competition.

The practice, in partnership with engineering consultants COWI, has been chosen by developer Mustad Eiendom to build not one, not two but three new bridges to connect the emerging Lilleakerbyen district in west Oslo.

Ezra Groskin, director of Moxon, added: “Developing three bridges in proximity has given us a chance to push our pragmatic approach to design. The form, structure and materials of each suit their specific location, span and function while shared articulation and details tie them together as members of a single family.”

The trio of timber, steel and stone crossings span the Lysaker River, employing distinctive designs while reading as a unified intervention in the landscape. Comprising two pedestrian 'culture bridges' alongside a dedicated cycle bridge the links provide crucial connective tissue for the developing neighbourhood.

Obtaining their name from their role in connecting the district's main cultural hubs the pedestrian links lie midway between two waterfalls taking a direct route between both banks. The structural timber cycle bridge takes a different path, twisting in an 'S' curve to ensure an accessible gradient across the short 40m span.
