Terracotta and terraces help to green Candleriggs Square

A major build-to-rent project in Glasgow city centre has reached external completion ahead of the first tenants arriving later this summer.

The £81.5m Candleriggs Square build, funded by Legal & General and built by Graham Construction, will help meet rising rental demand through the provision of 346 apartments.

The joint venture between Drum Property Group and Stamford Investments has been designed by Stallan-Brand and opens onto the Trongate with an entrance lobby, offering direct access to a communal landscaped courtyard on the first floor.

Graeme Bone, Group managing director of Drum Property Group, said: “Candleriggs Square is now starting to come alive, fulfilling the development vision we outlined when we first took ownership of the site in 2019. With the completion of the L&G apartments and the opening of The Social Hub Glasgow, we are seeing this vital part of the city centre, which had lain dormant for more than 20 years, take shape in spectacular fashion."  

 Peppered by a sequence of roof terraces the tower follows hot on the heels of a hotel opened in April.

Nice to see they've incorporated garden allotments into the roof gardens. Apparently Glasgow city centre has been crying out for them according to most comments......

Really disappointed in this scheme and how it addresses the street. The base course is unresolved and unwelcoming in parts.

The green cladding also fails to impress.

The previous iteration by Richard Murphy offered up a much more urban vision of what that site could have been with a hierarchy of 'public' spaces and a much more considered plinth to Trongate. The articulation of forms, of surfaces and of materials was a much more sophisticated proposition than that which Stallan Brand has delivered. I'm afraid the provision of terracotta cladding (see also Buchanan Wharf) doesn't quite do it for me and the workmanship on the brick at ground level is average at best - take a look at the string courses at first floor level - they are all over the shop, not to mention the mortar smears that pervade the public realm works. The facade onto Candleriggs appears to be completely non-active. A very ordinary build of big dumb angled boxes - the best part of which is the retained facade. Alas.
Over and above whether it was RMA or Stallan Brand, welcome to your newest privately-owned publicly accessible space , including, I believe, the new Brunswick Lane which I recall specifically being questioned at Committee @ PPP stage. Is this how new public spaces in the city should be provided ? I would submit no.

Lovely stuff. Great to see this gap site filled at last. Best development in Glasgow for some time.

It has its detractors and there are some signs of VE at play, but on the whole a really good development that hopefully goes some way to regenerating the rest of the Trongate and raising the bar for future developments across the rest of the city centre.
