Historic Airdrie store switched from departments to apartments

North Lanarkshire Council has completed a key element in its regeneration of Airdrie town centre with the unveiling of a new apartment block on the site of the 150-year-old Orr's Department Store.
Reflecting the changing retail environment and stalled progress from commercial developers the authority stepped into the breach with plans of its own to bring the key site back into use.
This takes the form of a contemporary replacement of the unlisted building by DarntonB3 Architects, providing 20 apartments for social rent with two polished granite ground-floor retail units fronting South Bridge Street.
Council leader Jim Logue said: "We are thrilled to breathe new life into this landmark site. The redevelopment of Orrs represents a positive step forward for Airdrie, offering residents a reason to be proud of their town centre once again.
"This regeneration project has been a long time coming, but I'm sure local people will share my delight in finally seeing the building brought back to life."
The project represents a change of heart by the council which originally proposed to build a neoclassical facsimile but ultimately delivered a modern block in yellow render and zinc.
