Detached home earmarked for a garden plot in Saughton

The leafy suburb of Saughton, southwest of Edinburgh city centre, is set for an infill detached home under proposals by Carlsson Properties and Hackland + Dore Architects.

A garden plot at 8 Saughton Park has been identified for a snug fit new build home that terminates the street line before an off angle corner block. Adhering to the established height and eaves line the design is described as offering a 'complementary contrast' with its neighbours, defined by a recessed ground floor.

In a proposal statement the architects wrote: "A ‘portal’ feature to the front elevation integrates vertical timber battens providing a secure access to the side and rear gardens and discrete screening to the refuse and recycling bins. As part of one comprehensive approach the battens cover different functions throughout the street elevation; they act as window louvres, cladding, garden gate and fence. This approach enhances the streetscape and provides a unique character of cohesion to the proposal."

Skewed recessed solid brick panels augment the mixed render finish of the street with an access lane maintaining access to shared rear gardens of current properties. A copper coloured metal mansard roof is also planned to hide an upper level bedroom and bathroom.

Contiguous massing will see the home slot into the streetscape

The side access is so discrete, the client doesn't own it?
