Edinburgh brewery transformation to deliver 168 homes
May 9 2024
A historic brewery on the western outskirts of Edinburgh is to become the site of 168 homes with the submission of a formal planning application by Artisan Real Estate.
The culmination of an extensive consultation process the application covers the 1.9 acre site of the former Caledonian Brewery in Shandon, distinguished by its 130ft red brick chimney. Working with Sheppard Robson with Simpson & Brown, Atelier Ten and RankinFraser the team will meticulously preserve a range of B-listed industrial buildings on the site while stripping back later accretions to pave the way for new build apartments, duplex properties and mews houses.
Artisan’s managing director for Scotland, David Westwater said: “Artisan’s development proposals intend to respect, preserve and tell the story of the Caledonian Brewery.
"We intend to maintain and celebrate as much of the brewery’s unique heritage as possible, and this includes marking the site of the two original springs on site which originally provided fresh water for the brewery process."
Close to a fifth of the planned homes will be housed within repurposed listed buildings with new additions slotting into the established built pattern, modelled on a Maltings building lost to fire 30 years ago.
Originally built in 1892 to designs by Edinburgh architect Robert Hamilton Paterson the site was closed by Heineken in 2022 with production moving to Belhaven Brewery.
