Old Kilpatrick to rediscover the Clyde as a marine technology leader
May 7 2024
A disused oil terminal near the Erskine Bridge in Old Kilpatrick is to become a marine technology park with the award of planning permission in principle.
Malin Group has secured outline consent from West Dunbartonshire Council to reimagine the Carless Oil Terminal as a Marine Technology Park comprising specialised engineering, manufacturing and research facilities.
The contaminated brownfield site, disused since 1982, will be developed from 2025 to 2032 and beyond to support the shipbuilding industry with specialised repair and fabrication yards. Related start-ups will also be encouraged to set up shop in the park.
Phase one works have already been consented and will see a heavy lift quayside for vessels of up to 1,100 tons constructed to give access to a deep water channel in the River Clyde.
The indicative masterplan by Stantec juggles the needs of heavy industry and academic research by splitting development across three distinct character zones, including a public cafe and outreach area.
Taller manufacturing units will be visually reduced with translucent yellow cladding panels contrasting with composite cladding and precast blockwork.
