Barnardo's Gap Homes extend care for young people
April 23 2024
Children's charity Barnardo's has unveiled an innovative residential project in Stirling designed to house young people leaving care.
Five 'Gap Homes' designed from the ground up by O'Donnell Brown Architects to support the transition of residents from institutional to independent living.
Built by Morris & Spottiswood the properties provide affordable accommodation in an established community with the benefit of on-site care assistance from Barnardo's staff for up to two years.
Martin Crewe, the director of Barnardo’s Scotland, said: “It can be very difficult for young people leaving care to live alone for the first time, especially when it comes to running a home on a limited budget. Gap Homes create a safe and stable environment in which young people can thrive. What’s more, they are built in established communities and have low running costs."
Addressing a lack of such specialised accommodation the project raises standards and improves capacity with a range of similar ventures now underway across the country, including a sister project at Maryhill.
