Milltimber home emphasises lightness with overhangs and sun tunnels

Plans for a detached family home in the suburban setting of Milltimber, Aberdeen, have been filed by Fiddes Architects.
Latterly serving as a construction access road to the Oldfold Farm housing estate the site was previously a paddock and already has planning permission in principle for a two-storey home.
The narrow, rectangular plot necessitates a north-to-south build in line with Oldfold Farm House next door, acknowledged by the inclusion of a granite wall.
In a planning statement, Fiddes Architects observed: "The building has 2 distinct forms broken down into 3 smaller elements that together to create a the single built form. The two-storey mass has a distinctive break in material which separates the first floor from the ground floor, clad in metal corrugate and timber to give a sense of a lighter mass the first floor sits on the solid base walls of granite and render. The single storey element wraps round the two-storey section and is clad in a crisp render to allow it to sit subservient between the two-storey mass and the neighbouring building."
A sheltered corner entrance is pulled deep within the building envelope leading to a well-lit hallway from staggered roof lights that marks the transition from two to single-storey elements.
Overhanging elements resting on glass and slender steel columns are used to reduce the apparent weight of the first floor while also providing sheltered external space.
