March 27 2024
The University of Edinburgh has taken the next step in the evolution of its King's Buildings Campus with the launch of a consultation to demolish the Darwin Tower (scheduled for September).
New Darwin will see the 10-storey block replaced by a new research and teaching building run by the School of Biological Sciences. Housing laboratories, incubator space and outreach facilities the net-zero-ready facility is promoted as a next-generation bioscience hub, furthering the university's goals in mitigating climate change, healthy ageing and improving food security.
In a statement, the university wrote: "The proposed replacement of the Darwin Tower with a building of a reduced height and more appropriate scale, and higher quality design, akin to the adjacent buildings and landscape will offer significant visual and environmental improvement to the campus, city, and surrounding areas."
The initial consultation will be held today at the Elm Lecture Theatre in the Nucleus Building on Thomas Bayes Road, Edinburgh, between 16:00 and 19:00.
BMJ Architects are taking forward the latest scheme, replacing an earlier design by Fielden Clegg Bradley.
