Glasgow hotel looks up with a planned extension
March 14 2024
A Glasgow hotel is to undergo significant expansion with the addition of a 90-bedroom rooftop extension above the ballroom on Cambridge Street.
Axiom Architects propose to extend the four-star DoubleTree by Hilton through the addition of two three-storey powdercoated aluminium bedroom blocks, a lightweight solution minimising the need for structural interventions.
In a statement, the practice wrote: "The basic massing aligns the windows with the ballroom facade below, in a regular rhythm. In reference to the existing hotel, vertical fins are added to break up the elevation, and articulate the rhythm.
"Prominent horizontal bands are then added to articulate the floors, and maintain the horizontal language of the ballroom. Vertical features are added to the corners of the building to enable the existing stairs to extend to roof level, and bookend the building."
Existing circulation corridors will extend directly into both new wings, terminating at an additional stair core, with support columns introduced to the ballroom below to carry the additional loads.
