Aberdeen punches west in landward expansion
March 1 2024
Plans for 435 homes in principle as part of the westward greenfield march of Aberdeen have been filed by Aberdeen City Council.
Part of the Greenferns masterplan the residential build by AtkinsRealis and Optimised Environments forms one part of a larger landward expansion of the city's northwestern fringe of up to 1,500 properties, a school and a gypsy traveller site.
Characterised by open agricultural land fringed by woodland the council-owned site has been released for housing to accommodate greater numbers of people working from home seeking access to outdoor space.
In a vision statement, the council wrote: "The Greenferns Landward site offers the opportunity for a new residential neighbourhood which is carefully tied into the existing city and will form the new western urban edge. The site will be well integrated with pedestrian and cycle connections to the existing network at numerous locations and proposes a new movement network throughout the site which will ensure walking and cycling is easy and direct."
A gas-fired combined heating and power system is proposed to power the district with an emphasis on open space and active travel routes seeing two islands of housing encircled by landscaped grounds.
