Drab Dundee car park to drive a green revolution

Dundee City Council has outlined its vision to repurpose a multi-storey car park into a public transport hub as part of a city centre recovery strategy.

Pending approval of a £4.5m construction tender by councillors next month the project will see vehicles evicted from Bell Street car park in favour of electric charging stations, bike hire facilities and storage units.

Powered by a solar array and battery storage system the radical remodelling will dovetail with public realm improvements.

Committee convener Steven Rome said: “Approval of this tender will start the ambitious redevelopment of the current car park into a pioneering green hub which is designed to help change people’s travel habits for the future.

“This project will make a significant contribution towards our goal of creating a greener city made up of strong communities where people feel empowered and safe, and where we are tackling climate change to reach our target of net zero emissions by 2045."

McLaughlin & Harvey is the preferred contractor for the works, which include replacement services, concrete repairs and wall-tie replacement.

Can't see how this is 'leveling up', I walk through this carpark every other night and see homeless sleeping in the lift and on the stairs, unbelievable people have to live like that in the 6th richest nation on earth. I suppose it's no wonder when money is squandered on nonsense like this, how about turning the roof into a community garden, gets the sun all day and great city centre location.

Unbelievable in this day and age that people still don't understand different budgets for different purposes.
Spending on this does not preclude spending on the homeless, or does that not sit with the simplistic world view?

Unbelievable that people would rather see money spent on this because the cash comes from some other 'budget'. Were supposed to live in a society, instead we live in this economy
