'Community croft' leads West Pilton park transformation
February 12 2024
Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust has shared plans for a new public park at West Pilton following a series of drop-in sessions.
Working in tandem with the City of Edinburgh Council the Trust has developed designs for an enhanced green lung for the city combining play spaces, wetlands and public amenities.
A range of attractions proposed by Optimised Environments will include a climbing boulder, skate park and slide to bring life to the area in the RIBA Stage 2 masterplan. This will dovetail with enhancements to existing street furniture, a redesigned path network and improved lighting to increase footfall.
A cost-effective strategy will be employed where possible, such as cladding a utilitarian boundary fence with Beech hedging, with new sections fully enclosing the park boundary. Modular furniture will also be used to furnish the park with drinking fonts, bins and seating.
Split between three scenic zones of open amenity space, wetlands and meadow the new park from planting and a 'community croft' where locals will be encouraged to get hands-on to help supply fresh produce to the park cafe.
