Pedestrian-first airport neighbourhood takes off
February 12 2024
Plans to build a new airport neighbourhood in west Edinburgh have taken a further step forward with the submission of a masterplan by Crosswind Developments and jmarchitects.
Land identified as being surplus to requirements by Edinburgh Airport will become a mixed-use district comprising homes, commercial space and a new primary school, all benefitting from proximity to Edinburgh Gateway.
Conceived as a series of perimeter blocks flanking a heavily trafficked 'civic corridor' alongside the railway line segueing to colonies and parkland around the Gogar Burn to the south. The masterplan will also allocate land by use, with office and hotel activities grouped to the southeast.
In a planning statement, jmarchitects wrote: "The masterplan will deliver a network of well-connected and desirable places to live, work and play, but also connect with neighbouring developments, West Craigs (north and south) and West Town Edinburgh, to cultivate a wider livable community."
Landscaping by Open will enhance the setting of Gogar Castle with all existing trees to be maintained.
