Parkhead Passivhaus homes to energise the East End
February 6 2024
Parkhead Housing Association is seeking to bring new life to a brownfield site on the corner of Sorby and Powfoot Street in Glasgow's East End with an application to build 22 Passivhaus apartments.
John Gilbert Architects propose to knit the site, a former quarry, into surrounding tenements by erecting a series of pitched roof blocks with feature gables to the North and South.
Explaining their decision to build out the street wall the architects wrote: "The blocks are separated only nominally from the street edge by a strip of barrier planting or by car parking. This eliminates the 4/5m space in front of many postwar east-end tenements, which, where these spaces have been neglected or misused, have become a problematic characteristic.
"The buildings have been arranged in such a way to benefit the quality of external space by providing a courtyard that is not perpetually in shade, which a traditional pavement edge layout would not do."
Prioritising low fuel bills for tenants the design seeks to minimise waste energy wherever possible by building to high density. Explaining their Passivhaus approach the architects added: "The buildings will be designed to meet the Passivhaus standard, the achievement of this performance standard is aided by a dense form with the greatest possible ratio of internal volume to surface area, a form closest to a large cube is preferable."
The timber-framed buildings will be sheathed in red and blonde brick with a blue base course uniting all elements.
