Glasgow land disposal lays the ground for 80 homes
February 2 2024
Glasgow City Council has offloaded four sites to the north and east of the city to help boost the supply of new homes.
Two sites in Springburn at 12 Carron Crescent and 96 Elmvale Street, formerly home to St Aloysius Primary School and its annexe, have been snapped up by Edzell Property Holdings for £245k. The developer will now proceed to build 49 homes across the 2.3 and 1.6-acre sites.
Closer to the city centre a former car park at 15 Spoutmouth, just 100m from Glasgow Cross, has been passed to Wheatley Homes for the sum of £108k to deliver a further 34 social homes above two ground floor commercial units.
Councillor Ruairi Kelly said: “The supply of new homes is a very serious challenge in Glasgow and many other places, and meeting this requires new thinking and action. The approvals of these site disposals - and the beginning of negotiations on the possible disposal of 10 other sites in the city - paves the way for the creation of more housing, and I am pleased to say there is a pipeline of these disposals coming forward.”
The former Nitshill Childcare Unit completes this round of disposals, with Wheatley paying £325k for the nine-bed bungalow to be used as accommodation for vulnerable people.
This prominent car park, declared surplus to requirements in November 2023, will fuel a growing wave of new social housing in the area
