Dundee ramps up active travel connectivity at Magdalen Green
January 25 2024
Nicoll Russell Studios has shared plans for a replacement step-free access bridge over the Perth to Dundee railway line at Magdalen Green in Dundee's west end.
Designed with Stantec on behalf of Dundee City Council with funding from Sustrans, the project will improve active travel infrastructure by offering a fully accessible alternative to the car. The 66m long link will offer a shared foot and cycleway with a width of 3.5m to accommodate both sets of users.
Willie Watt, director at Nicoll Russell Studios, told Urban Realm: "Our work at Magdalen Green builds upon our experience of working on bridge, infrastructure and transport projects throughout the UK as well as more locally on projects like the Seabraes footbridge which also spans the railway a little further east."
Design constraints have dictated the form of the proposed bridge; including minimum vertical clearance with the railway below and a restriction on cable-stayed pylons owing to proximity to Dundee Airport.
The new bridge is also significantly longer than the current crossing (22m) as a result of extended ramped approaches, linking to a Cherry tree boulevard.
The bridge won't be wide enough for separate lanes, with foot and wheeled traffic sharing the same space
