New East Kilbride station signposts rail modernisation drive

Network Rail is to break ground on a new station building for East Kilbride next week as part of a package of modernisation and accessibility improvements.

Due to open in June 2025 the new building by IDP Architects will occupy the footprint of the existing station between Torrance Road and West Mains Road.

Laura McWilliams, Network Rail senior programme manager, said: “When the new station building completes next year, it will further enhance the passenger experience - as too will the sustainable benefits of electrifying the railway by allowing the removal of diesel trains and introducing carbon-free journeys for communities along the East Kilbride railway corridor.”

Passengers will benefit from a new booking hall, waiting area and small shop serving newly extended platforms ready for the introduction of electric services from December 2025.

Copy, paste..... undo.
I wonder if site analysis was carried out for this.
Visually and contextually, its a shocker!

Looks like a public convenience that was built in the 80's.

I'm assuming the introduction of automatic barriers means public using the park and ride facility need to enter the platform via the Ticket office now. This has never been the case at EK station. Albeit its a bit of a faff, its not really an issue for an able bodied customer but it is for someone with mobility issues. In the existing arrangement a wheelchair user can park up in the accessible bay and be 6-7m from the door of the train. In the proposed arrangement you can multiply that travel distance by 20 at least.

All passenger will now be forced to exit the station on to Torrance Road. The area is chaos when the train arrives. Even though there are designated Taxis bays the Taxis compete to be on the main road parked up on double yellow lines and cause chaos when train arrive from Glasgow. This arrangement will only exacerbate the issue

I appreciate there will be land ownership issues to factor in but the new station just looks like its in the wrong place. Surely a location more central to the car park would be more practical.

Stop moaning. The old station isn't fit for the 21st century so be glad we're getting a new one.

I agree that the old station is past its best, wonder where the folk who use the park and ride, where are they going to park now, bet you the streets will be packed with their cars leading to the station.

What about the new one on Redwood? How many stations to we need?
All while the line is single, with no plan to duel. Shocking administration
