January 12 2024
BAE Systems have broken ground on a naval shipbuilding training academy at South Street, Scotstoun, to designs by Oberlanders and Portacabin.
The learning hub will support a new generation of shipbuilding talent and is to be supported by a trade hall - a retrofitted industrial building which will house full-scale naval mock-ups.
Paul Feely, academy and engineering director of BAE Systems’ Naval Ships business, said: "This new training facility is an exciting demonstration of our commitment to shipbuilding on the Clyde, allowing us to further support thousands of highly skilled jobs in Scotland. Our investment in Glasgow will help us to deliver the national endeavour that is the Type 26 programme and ensure that we can provide navies around the world with a competitive edge in the decades to come."
Providing 30 classrooms, a laboratory and offices the two-storey building will require partial removal of a boundary wall to form a landscaped entrance.
The work is scheduled to be completed in the second half of the year and is being conducted concurrently with the delivery of a custom shipbuilding hall in Govan.
