Planning concerns force revisions to historic Glasgow police station
December 18 2023
A historic police station on Turnbull Street, Glasgow, is the subject of a revised planning application to transform it into courtyard apartments, following 'overmassing' concerns related to the previous design.
This is to be achieved via the surgical demolition of the northern cell block to mitigate overlooking concerns of neighbours and increase the area of communal amenity space. Further changes will see the loss of distinctive 45-degree angled bay windows to the rear elevation owing to the 'poor and unacceptable' aspect provided. Revised windows will have lowered cills to maximise glazing and will use frosted glass to respect the privacy of neighbouring flats.
In a statement outlining the proposed changes Detail wrote: "Our original application was a full retention of the existing building with 45 apartments. By providing this amount of units within the restrictions of the existing site there were negative impacts on privacy of the proposed residents and existing neighbours. Therefore we have redesigned the scheme as a 31 unit scheme. The main reduction in the number of units comes from the proposed demolition of the north connecting cell block in the courtyard."
A newly formed 'cutaway' roof will also permit the occupation of the attic with external terracing.
