Elgin South Street masterplan addresses creeping blight
December 8 2023
Moray Council is updating stakeholders on its vision for a reimagined South Street ahead of the Christmas shutdown as part of its city centre masterplan.
Working alongside Robertson and the University of the Highlands and Islands the local authority proposes a mix of shops, affordable housing and a business hub on a town centre site which as suffered from a number of shop closures and gap sites.
Working with Oberlanders the development partners will address vacant units and underdeveloped backlands to deliver up to 40 new homes lining a new pedestrian link to the High Street. A second phase of development would cement this connection by transforming the former Gordon Arms Hotel site at 118 High Street into a creative arts hub.
Councillor Marc Macrae commented: "After so many years lying empty it’s an exciting prospect to have new life breathed into these buildings. While it’s a complex project it’ll give a new dimension to South Street and the High Street and we’re confident we’ll start to see the transformation in the next few years."
A public exhibition will take place on 16 December between 10:00 and 14:00 at 118 High Street ahead of a detailed planning application early next year.
