Hotel conversion breathes new life into a failed office block
December 5 2023
A failed Glasgow office block has begun a new life as a hotel following an extensive refurbishment by Canadian hospitality provider Sandman Hotels.
The Sandman Signature by Neil Mathews Architects introduces 179 rooms over 10 floors, repairing and protecting spalling concrete cladding panels on Pegasus House, a 1970s office block, in the process.
Key interventions include the construction of a lightweight glazed addition separating the tower from its plinth with feature panels incorporated within the glazing.
Open plan floorplates have been subdivided to form a variety of 'fresh and modern' room styles with an emphasis on lighting displays, created by artist Konx-Om-Pax, to bring the structure to life.

Take my hand
We're off to never-never land
The black painted concrete, the slightly skew illuminated box above the entrance and the strange combination of raw, stained concrete wall and ceilings with that sub 70's interior.
The exterior lighting is like a visual assualt and the new facetted panels seem like an afterthought. Everything looks like it was done on the cheap.
Not, in my submission, an especially successful conversion.
Place is very busy and has high occupancy for the area.
But no. go with the feeling in your water....
Might have issues during the summer when we have 16 hours of daylight.
At least it will generate some economic activity for the city so not all bad.
