Big changes ahead for a Pentland Hills smallholding
November 28 2023
A dilapidated small holding at Damhead in the Pentland Hills is to be the subject of extensive remodelling and extension after receiving the all-clear from Midlothian Council.
City Architecture Office will transform the relationship of the building with its rural setting by forming a series of south-facing terraces. A large extension will connect to the original house by a new hall, responding to the agricultural setting with a hipped pitch gable and catslide dormer. This permits a second floor of accommodation without overshadowing the original building.
Awarding consent Midlothian Council officials stated: “The new extension will appear as an unashamed contemporary addition in its own right, the modern design and high quality finish of which will add to the architectural interest of the house."
Clad in rainscreen timber under a zinc roof the home will make use of a variety of low-carbon tech including a 'green' roof, solar panels, heat pumps and rainwater harvesting.
Project architect, Tom Robertson Smith commented: “Damhead creates an exemplar of low carbon, adaptable family habitation for living & working in a semi-rural environment.”
Further improvements will see the reinstatement of paddocks, the re-routing of overhead power lines underground and the removal of static caravans and a septic tank.
