Scotland + Venice exhibition to open at V&A Dundee next year
November 24 2023
Scotland + Venice, the cultural partnership propelling homegrown art and architecture onto the world stage, is to provide a curtain call for its contribution to the 18th International Architecture Exhibition by bringing the display home to the V&A Dundee next year.
A Fragile Correspondence is returning from Venice having drawn 15,000 visitors to the 18th Biennale showcase since 20 May. From 26 November 2024 the exhibition heads back to Dundee where local audiences can gain a deeper understanding of Scottish landscapes from Loch Ness to Ravenscraig and Orkney without racking up any air miles.
Fusing local languages and landscapes the exhibition invites visitors to explore a range of post-industrial and natural environments to forge new connections between each environment and the voices of the people who live there.
Split between Highlands, Island and Lowlands the event provides a variety of perspectives on the impact of the climate emergency and possible responses from participants including architect Dele Adeyemo; creative ethnologist Raghnaid Sandilands and chartered engineer Aaron McCarthy.
Amanda Catto, head of visual arts for Creative Scotland and chair of the Scotland + Venice partnership said: “A Fragile Correspondence has enabled us to strengthen Scotland’s reputation as an ambitious and innovative centre that is internationally open to new ideas and partnerships. With plans confirmed with V&A Dundee, we’re looking forward to sharing this important and thought-provoking work with audiences from across Scotland, and further afield."
This year's showcase will not be followed up next year after Scotland + Venice announced it had withdrawn from the 2024 setpiece owing to a lack of funds.
