Retirement flats plan to arrest the slow decay of Lochwinnoch Seminary

An abandoned seminary on the Buildings at Risk Register is the subject of a proposed retirement scheme by Convery Prenty Shields.

St Joseph's Seminary in Lochwinnoch is subject to a 'selective' refurbishment that will retain a 1940s chapel with the loss of remaining buildings including a C-listed dormitory building dating from 1936 and a Tudor-style mansion which is already gone.

In a statement the architects wrote: "In the period between 2005 & the present the building has been subject to extensive vandalism, theft & arson due to its relatively remote location, rendering it unsafe & requiring selective demolition. At present, only the 1936 dormitory block & the chapel remain standing. Consent to demolish the dormitory block due to its unsafe condition was granted in January 2022."

Last in use as a nursing home before closing its doors over 20 years ago St Philips Care Group propose to reactivate the land by building new apartments in buff block and brick fronting a refurbished walled garden.

The former chapel will be refurbished as part of this process to provide an additional 5 retirement flats.
