Leith scrapyard shifts from recycling to cycling

56Three Architects have drawn up detailed plans to replace a scrap metal merchant on Leith's rapidly densifying Salamander Street with a mix of build-to-rent and student flats.

Stephen G Dalton & Son are capitalising on mounting residential interest in the area by relocating its business, freeing up the industrial site for residential development.

Addressing the busy Salamander Place junction the planned accommodation is split between two connected blocks, utilising the substantial depth of the site to include three wings of additional flats to the south, framing two interior courtyards. Massing is enlivened through the use of two-tone brickwork with the upper floors of the corner block clad in a sage green accent metal.

An active retail frontage at ground level will help bed the development into the streetscape. An improved public realm along Salamander Street is also proposed to provide space for the future Leith Connections cycle path.

The accommodation mix includes 216 private rental apartments and a further 279 student beds.
