Hairmyres Station rebuild to put the spark back into rail travel

Network Rail and IDP Architects have lodged plans for a new Hairmyres station, including a footbridge and 11m lift towers, as part of the electrification of the route between East Kilbride and Glasgow.

The £140m East Kilbride Enhancement Project seeks to grow passenger numbers by improving station accessibility ahead of the introduction of electric train services in December 2025.

At Hairmyres these works will require relocating the station 600m to the west where a twin platform halt will be built served by a brick tile main building.

Documenting how the new look station will appear IDP wrote: "The main building will be single storey with a monopitch roof of steel insulated roof cladding system (mid-grey) which heightens towards the platform and track. The walls are proposed to be finished with a red/brown facing brick tile cladding. A light grey fibre cement rain-screen cladding will visually connect walls to the roof underside. A curtain walling façade system is proposed on the principal elevations to maximise natural light into the public spaces."

Land to the south has been earmarked by South Lanarkshire Council for a transport interchange that could include a community charging point for electric vehicles.

I never knew Hornby had an architecture division.

Still no roof on the stairs -- big safety fail.

Just because something is quick and easy to model on Revit and pump out by the dozen, does not guarantee that it translate into good architecture... put it this way, I can't imagine the descendants of Michael Portillo visiting these in 100 years.
