Twin Barlanarks blocks to rise on unassigned land

Springfield Properties has culminated its consultation process for the delivery of twin apartment blocks on 'white land' in Barlanark with the submission of a planning application.

The in-house design proposes 84 affordable flats of up to five bedrooms for the unassigned land, 10% of which will be suitable for wheelchair users.

Arranged around a new internal road network and woodland trail walking loop the plans integrate play and social spaces as well as introducing a formal frontage to Pendeen Road, set behind private front courts.

In a proposal statement, Springfield wrote: "Both blocks respond to the local built environment, providing scale and mass to a key corner and the gateway to the site. The landmark buildings will create a strong street presence and a positive frontage to the edges of the development.

"Natural play, terraced seating and allotment are an integral part of the design. Play on the way spaces have been arranged intermittently along the southern edge connected by a wide connected path."

Finished in contrasting light buff and charcoal brick the facades are enlivened by corner and Juliet balconies, feature recessed stack bond brickwork and tumble brick at key corners.

Some views offer hope.

Other views offer clunky 70's development corporation / social housing pastiche.

Surely we have learned something in the past 50 years?

Springfield are better than this.
Surely ...

I wonder how grim these will look on a wet Glasgow Monday. One thing is for sure you'll never see and of that surrounding greenery.

Looks great. Barlanark has been neglected for so long, despite being right next to a train station with ease of access to Glasgow and Edinburgh.

#1 I don't think Springfield are better than this, sadly.

We should all get angry with this kind of thing. Especially in an area that can ill afford this.

Dreich, dull, mute.

To talk of gateways, landmarks, street presence and positive frontage is to take us all for numpties.
