Curved student blocks to reactivate a forgotten pocket of Tollcross
October 20 2023
Silvermills Estates and Fletcher Joseph Architects are leading efforts to deliver new student accommodation at a former Edinburgh nightclub.
Land at 3 West Tollcross south of the city centre has been earmarked for 145 student rooms spread across three stepped blocks of up to six floors within the predominantly Victorian neighbourhood.
The island site, bounded by Home Street and Lochrin Terrace, will incorporate ground-floor commercial units including a relocated gym to activate these routes on the ground floor of curved blocks to soften their impact.
Summarising the application the architects wrote: "Overall these proposals offer a well-mannered solution, delivering sustainable uses by means of a coordinated, mixed-use development that keys into and activates wider public realm and green space opportunities. Considered massing and townscape analysis has informed the proposed built forms that are sympathetic and complementary to that which exists while completing a challenging urban edge."
A public green space is to be retained, folded between the curved facades of the north and south blocks.
