Central span of Govan to Partick footbridge berths at Yorkhill Quay

Visible progress on the delivery of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge connecting Govan to Partick has been made with the berthing of the main span ready for installation.
Preparatory works for the 6m wide cable-stayed swing bridge have been underway since April last year to provide an active travel corridor between the West End and South Side. Transported from Belgium the span comprises a 650-tonne moving element at 99m long which will be manouvred into position at Water Row on 17 October, weather permitting.
A smaller fixed span measuring 45 tonnes and 15.7m in length, will remain in storage until the north pier is complete next summer.
David Buchanan, project manager for Farrans Construction, said: “There are many factors to consider with a civil engineering operation such as this one, most of which we are able to plan, however, we also have changeable elements like the weather and tides to contend with. The crane we will use for the bridge is the Hebo Lift 10 which is capable of lifting 2200 tonnes."
Associated groundworks include the creation of new quay walls at Water Row and Pointhouse Quay as well as landscaped approach ramps.
