Historic New Town tram depot set for 42 cascading apartments
October 9 2023
Construction is in full swing for 42 apartments at the site of a historic tram depot in Edinburgh's New Town.
Square and Crescent are on-site at the former Silvermills Tram Depot between Stockbridge and Canonmills, delivering a cascading red brick block topped by tiered green roofs.
Co-founder Euan Marshall said: “There is a real responsibility in bringing forward a new build development in such a prominent and historically significant location.
“We’ve worked with our architecture partners to create something that we believe will be a fitting next chapter - and nods to the past use of the site while bringing in highly contemporary touches.
“The green roof spaces should add a further point of interest and they reflect the low carbon building techniques and sustainability at the core of this project.”
Latterly the site of office blocks dating from the 1980s, since demolished, the new design by Morgan McDonnell Architects will pay homage to its industrial ancestor through the use of custom ironmongery.

A lazy lump of reductive building design for such a 'prominent and historical site'.
Congratulations to the Architecture partners.
