Govan shipyard expansion progresses
September 27 2023
Detailed plans to erect a shipbuilding assembly hall at Govan Wet Basin are continuing to advance following the award of planning consent to BAE Systems.
Updated visualisations show how the covered fabrication yard will take a commanding presence on the River Clyde, including the creation of supporting accommodation, a reshaped quay wall and landscaped arrival space by McIlwaine.
Clad in light grey and blue horizontally laid composite panels the hall will be dominated by a folding fabric 'mega door' to designs by Corstorphine & Wright and HLM.
Providing a controlled environment for fabrication the hall will improve the welfare of shipyard workers and permit two ships to be built in tandem under cover.
Options for a green roof were discounted on the grounds of increased complication, with the approved design settling on trapezoidal composite panels.

Plus it is too small and in the wrong place.
And the Ministry of Slow Walking vibe has to go.
Apart from that a much needed progress for Clyde shipbuilding.
Hopefully the modern panel line will be next.
