Women's football surge sparks Melrose FC expansion

Camerons Strachan Yuill Architects has won planning consent to provide new community and sports development facilities for Melrose Football Club.
Working to alter and extend existing facilities the practice will restore the present heritage building at The Engine Room while adding a temporary pavilion that respects the conservation area.
Introducing modern changing facilities and an activity space open to the wider community the project responds to a boom in women's football through the replacement of an outdated extension with safe, secure and private facilities.
In their design statement, the architects observed: "Proposals involve the careful demolition of the existing, upvc clad extension and construction of a new timber-clad extension to meet the growing demands of the club.
"The addition of this purpose-built timber changing facility at 123sqm will provide contemporary home and away dressing rooms including shower and toilet facilities, a suitable referees room, equipment storage space, a fully accessible WC and a kitchen facility all to Sport Scotland requirements. A stepped plinth will form seating and informal break-out space to look out onto the park along with external paving to the side and rear to facilitate social gathering on match days."
This will free up the historic Engine Room, formerly a fire station, to serve as a flexible open-plan space for community use.
