Haghill tenement gap set for a tight squeeze vertical home

A void between tenement blocks at 16 Aberfeldy Street, Haghill, has been lined up for vertical accommodation modelled on similar infill approaches elsewhere in the city.

Framed Estates propose a snug fit infill that purposefully contrasts with its red sandstone neighbours, with a combination of grey brick, zinc cladding and timber rainscreen.

In a planning statement, the applicant wrote: "The chosen palette of materials, and the ‘contemporary’ design of the proposed extension, will provide an appropriate contrast between the adjoining sandstone tenements, and the new build element."

Set back from the street edge to reduce impact the proposal will replace the current ground floor retail unit with five floors of accommodation up to the roof line.

Standing as a single home entered from an adjoining apartment, a previously converted retail unit, the extension would house a ground floor lounge and small garden with ensuite bedrooms stacked above. The top floor will also house a small recessed balcony.

So people forgot that these gaps were left very deliberately in the tenement wall to promote air flow in the back court?

This also won't get past building control, fire escape does not comply.. did well to get every owner to agree tho!!!
