'Grand terrace' to complete Thomson's Strathbungo masterplan

New plans to deliver 104 apartments on brownfield land in the heart of Strathbungo have been filed by Page\Park Architects.

The practice has finalised its designs for 134 Nithsdale Drive, a contemporary nod to Alexander 'Greek' Thomson's A-listed Moray Place. This treats the building as a 'continuous terrace with pavilion ends', throwing out early plans for a feature corner. Projecting elements to the rear has also been rationalised, more closely adhering to the template laid out by nearby tenements.

This approach completes Thomson's 19th-century Strathbungo masterplan, building out the street as originally intended while creating a series of courtyard squares to the rear. The ends of the terrace meanwhile employ deep brick reveals and pre-cast string courses referring to Moray Place.

In a planning statement Page/Park observed: "The views from the railway bridge and DarnleyStreet to the North have been highly considered in the design development, ensuring the building has been designed in the round.

"Design development has led to a more formalised approach to the façade, using local symmetries and rhythms by grouping some key feature bays. Furthermore, the building perimeter has been simplified and massed to provide more usable amenity space. The proposal now includes south-facing balconies within the depth of the plan, assisting with the activation of the Nithsdale Drive elevation."

A contrasting metal cladding system to the roof terraces and between dormers contrasts with the use of brick in the main.

And yet it bears no relationship to Thomson's architecture.

Yes, no relation to the architecture of Thomson. It just bears it’s big ugly fat 7 storey bum to the railway rather than making what could have been a lovely cute little terrace and small street to the railway like at Moray Place.
